Bills Don't Take the Off-Season Off

The boat payment doesn't care that it's the off-season. Neither does the insurance bill, the slip fee, or the mortgage. Running a boat comes with a real number attached every year, whatever that number is for your boat. It doesn't shrink just because the calls stopped coming in.

In season, that's rarely the problem. I've had three bookings in a single day before. A cancellation during a stretch like that isn't a crisis. It's practically a gift, one less trip to run before the next one.

Off-season is a different animal. One trip a week, if that. The phone goes quiet and it stays quiet, and the bills don't notice the difference.

The trap is waiting for the phone to ring.

Most captains treat the slow months as something that happens to them. Wait it out, ride the calendar down to nearly nothing, hope the season turns back on when it's supposed to. I've said this before. Reach out before next season starts, not after it's already booked up. The slow months are exactly when that reaching out has to happen. Wait until spring and I'm competing with every other captain's spring push at the same time.

The trick is to stay in front of people, not behind them.

A fishing report does more work than it looks like it does. I've made the case before for a running list and staying in touch. It matters even more here. A quick note on what's biting keeps the boat in somebody's head during the exact months they'd otherwise forget it exists, which is exactly when the bills don't forget about me.

None of this needs a big pitch. A short check-in does the job just as well. "Been slow out there, was thinking of you, wanted to see how the family's doing." No ask attached. The ask comes easier once I'm already in the conversation, not showing up cold.

But the list of contacts has to exist before any of this works. None of this works without a list built during the season, while the trip's still fresh in somebody's mind. Off-season outreach isn't a separate skill. It's the same list, used on a schedule instead of only when the phone happens to ring.
